Best time to visit Gilgit Baltistan (Month by Month)
The main tourist season runs from May to October, but every month offers a different experience. April and May bring the magical cherry and apricot blossoms, particularly in Hunza and Skardu. June, July, and August are the warmest months and the only time you can reliably access high-altitude areas like the Deosai plateau, Naltar's alpine lakes, and Babusar Top. September and October deliver golden autumn valleys, crisp clear skies, and arguably the best mountain views of the year. Winter (November to March) is extremely cold with many high roads closed, but it offers dramatic, quiet snowscapes for hardy, adventurous travellers.
Road vs Air: How to get there
You can reach the region by air with short 45–60 minute flights to Skardu or Gilgit from Islamabad, offering unparalleled views of the Himalayas and Karakoram. However, these flights are strictly weather-dependent, so we always build a road-backup plan into our fly-in packages. Traveling overland on the legendary Karakoram Highway (KKH) is an epic road trip. From Islamabad to Hunza is roughly 13–14 hours of driving, and to Skardu is about 17–20 hours. We usually split these road journeys over two days with a comfortable overnight stop in Chilas, Naran, or Besham. Many multi-region itineraries fly one way and drive the other, providing the perfect balance of time-saving and scenic road travel.

Because you will be crossing multiple altitudes—from Gilgit (1,500m) to Khunjerab Pass (4,693m)—layering is essential. In summer, pack t-shirts for the day, but always bring a warm fleece jacket, a windbreaker, and thermal base layers for cold evenings at high altitude.
