Day-by-Day Itinerary

1. 1Day 1:Islamabad → Naran

   Up the Hazara Motorway to Balakot, then into the Kaghan valley alongside the Kunhar river to Naran — roughly 270 kilometres and six to eight hours, longer on a summer weekend when the Naran approach fills up. The private SUV is yours for the whole trip. Your room tonight is a couple suite, and dinner is arranged at the hotel.

2. 2Day 2:Naran → Hunza

   An early start, because today goes over Babusar Top. The road climbs past Lulusar Lake to the pass, drops onto the Karakoram Highway and runs north through Chilas and Gilgit before the final turn up to Karimabad. Babusar is a summer road and is subject to the season, weather and road conditions on the day; when it is shut we route through Besham instead.

3. 3Day 3:Karimabad Romance Walk

   A slow day, mostly on foot. Altit Fort and its Royal Garden sit at the lower end of the old settlement, and the lanes climbing from there towards Baltit are easy to wander in an afternoon. Later the viewpoint at Eagle's Nest, above Duikar, is where people go to watch the light leave the valley. Your candle-lit dinner is tonight.

4. 4Day 4:Khunjerab Pass

   North through Gojal and into Khunjerab National Park, climbing to the Pakistan-China border at 4,693 metres — the highest paved border crossing in the world. It is a long day out and back, and a lot of height gained in a short time, so move slowly once you are up there. Subject to the season, weather and border authority timings.

5. 5Day 5:Attabad Boating

   Back down to Attabad, this time to get onto the water rather than drive past it. The lake is meltwater held behind the slide that closed this valley in 2010, and the colour really is what the photographs suggest. The boat is arranged for you. Afternoon back in Karimabad, or longer by the shore if the weather is generous.

6. 6Day 6:Naltar Lakes

   South to Gilgit and then roughly forty kilometres up into Naltar, where pine forest and alpine meadow replace the bare rock of the main valley entirely. The rainbow lakes lie higher again, reached as a jeep-and-walk excursion rather than a drive to the shore. Naltar Bala is the place to stop and eat. Overnight in the valley.

7. 7Day 7:Naltar → Besham

   The long leg south: down out of Naltar to Gilgit, then the Karakoram Highway through Chilas and along the Indus to Besham. This is the hardest driving day of the eight and we start early. Besham is somewhere to sleep rather than somewhere to see — the point of stopping is to make the last morning short.

8. 8Day 8:Besham → Islamabad

   The shortest day of the trip, and deliberately so: down the Karakoram Highway and onto the motorway for Islamabad, with the schedule built so the final morning is not a rush. We drop you at your hotel or the airport. If you are flying onward the same day, leave room for traffic on the approach into the city.
