Day-by-Day Itinerary

1. 1Day 1:Fly to Skardu

   The flight from Islamabad takes about an hour and on a clear morning passes close enough to Nanga Parbat to fill the window. We meet you at Skardu airport and transfer you to the hotel; how much of the afternoon is left depends on when the aircraft actually lands. All meals are included on this package from dinner tonight. Weather dependent; timings and routing may change according to the airline.

2. 2Day 2:Shangrila & Kachura

   A full day at the two Kachura lakes rather than a rushed stop between drives. Lower Kachura holds the Shangrila resort and its much-photographed red-roofed restaurant; Upper Kachura, further along the track, is deeper, colder and has trout in it. A whole day here means time to walk the shoreline properly and eat lunch beside the water instead of in the vehicle.

3. 3Day 3:Deosai Plateau

   A full day on the plateau in the dedicated 4x4 that comes with this package. The road climbs past Sadpara and out onto open ground above four thousand metres, where the horizon flattens and the only things moving are marmots. Sheosar Lake is roughly three hours in. Deosai is seasonal, and the crossing is subject to weather and road conditions on the day.

4. 4Day 4:Khaplu Valley

   Three hours east along the Shyok to Khaplu, the last wide valley before the Karakoram closes in, with Manthokha visited on the way out. The palace stands above the village, restored by the Aga Khan Trust and now working as a hotel, and the mosque below it is several centuries old. We leave early and eat on the road, because tomorrow is the flight home.

5. 5Day 5:Return Flight

   Breakfast, then the transfer to Skardu airport for the flight back to Islamabad. If you have an onward connection out of Islamabad the same day, tell us before you book — this sector cancels often enough that we would rather build a buffer night in than watch you miss an international flight. Weather dependent; timings and routing may change according to the airline.
