Day-by-Day Itinerary

1. 1Day 1:Arrival & Kachura Lakes

   You land in the early afternoon if the schedule holds, and we take you out to the lakes before the light goes rather than straight to the hotel. Lower Kachura first for the Shangrila view, then the short walk up to the upper lake, which loses most of the crowd. Skardu bazaar in the evening, livelier than it looks from the road. Weather dependent; timings and routing may change according to the airline.

2. 2Day 2:Shigar Valley

   Shigar is an hour from Skardu and the drive itself is much of the point, following the river past apricot orchards and villages built from the same stone as the hills behind them. The fort at the top of the valley is the set piece, with the Amburiq Mosque a short distance beyond it. Sarfaranga and Blind Lake fill the return. A relaxed day by this trip's standards.

3. 3Day 3:Khaplu Valley

   Three hours east, and the valley narrows as you go. Khaplu Fort looks down from the slope above the village; the Chaqchan Mosque below it is the older building and the more interesting one, carved in timber rather than built in stone. The Ghouri tree line frames the last stretch of road. Time to walk the riverside villages, which is the part couples usually want longer at.

4. 4Day 4:Waterfalls & Scenic Spots

   Two and a half hours south into Kharmang. Manthokha drops in stages and is worth the short walk in; Hussainabad is smaller and quieter and most people skip it, which is reason enough to stop. Chocolate Rock and the Mount Cap formation at Sermik sit at the roadside, and both photograph far better in the afternoon light on the way back than at flat midday.

5. 5Day 5:Basho Valley Adventure

   Two hours out, and the last part is a jeep track rather than a road, so the day runs in a 4x4. Basho is forest and meadow where the rest of Baltistan is rock and sand, and the change is abrupt enough to surprise most people who see it. There is time in the village as well as the meadows. Subject to weather and road conditions on the day.

6. 6Day 6:Departure

   Breakfast and checkout, then the airport. On time, you are back in Islamabad before lunch. If not, we stay with you and rebook the next departure; going down by road instead is arranged separately. Anything you meant to buy in the bazaar is better done the evening before than on the way out. Weather dependent; timings and routing may change according to the airline.
