Gateway to K2, sapphire lakes, and the cold desert of Katpana.
Skardu is the historic capital of Baltistan — a region culturally and linguistically tied to Tibet for over a thousand years. The Balti people speak a dialect of archaic Tibetan and the Yokhang Buddhist heritage is visible in old rock carvings near Manthal village. The Shigar and Khaplu valleys were ruled by independent Rajas until the mid-20th century, and their palace-forts (now restored as Serena heritage hotels) showcase a unique fusion of Tibetan, Kashmiri and Central Asian architecture. Skardu became internationally famous as the gateway to K2 and the Karakoram's 8,000m peaks, hosting expeditions from the 1950s onward.
Known as 'Heaven on Earth', featuring a unique aircraft-restaurant beside Lower Kachura Lake.
The second highest plateau in the world, home to the Himalayan Brown Bear.
One of the world's highest cold deserts, offering ATV rides and glamping.
A spectacular 180-foot artificial waterfall in the Kharmang Valley.
Skardu International Airport (KDU) receives daily flights from Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
The road journey via Karakoram Highway and Skardu Road takes 18-24 hours from Islamabad. Best split with an overnight stay in Chilas.
Local Transport: A 4x4 Prado or Land Cruiser is strictly recommended for Skardu to handle rough terrains like Deosai and Basho Valley.
Shangrila Resort offers premium lakeside views. In the city, Byarsa and Khoj Resort are excellent upscale options.
Balti cuisine is distinct from anything else in Pakistan. Try Mamtu (steamed meat dumplings), Khurba (rich apricot stew), Prapu (buckwheat pancakes), Balti tea (salty, butter-rich), and the famous Skardu apricots — fresh in summer, dried year-round. Mountain trout from Shigar streams, grilled simply with salt and lemon, is unmissable. Try Dewane Khas in Skardu city, the lakeside restaurant at Shangrila Resort, or any local home you're invited into.
