Skardu by Air: Everything You Need to Know

Flights, baggage, weather cancellations and how we guarantee your itinerary.

Flying to Skardu is the fastest and most scenic way into Baltistan — but mountain weather makes it unpredictable. This complete Skardu by air guide covers the flight, timings, baggage, what happens if your flight is cancelled, and how to plan around the weather.

The Islamabad–Skardu flight

PIA operates the Islamabad to Skardu route in roughly 55–60 minutes, with daily flights in season landing at Skardu International Airport. On a clear day the flight passes close to Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram — for the best views, choose a right-side window seat flying Islamabad to Skardu.

Weather cancellations — and how to plan

Skardu flights are entirely weather-dependent and can be delayed or cancelled at short notice. The single most important rule is to keep a buffer day in your itinerary, especially before any onward international flight.

We keep a road-transfer backup via Chilas and flexible hotel bookings, so even if a flight is cancelled your trip continues without losing the whole plan.

Baggage & booking tips

Flights sell out quickly in summer, so book as early as possible. Check the current baggage allowance before you fly, and keep essentials — medication, a warm layer, chargers — in your hand luggage in case checked bags are delayed on a rescheduled flight.

What to do once you land

A typical fly-in trip runs 4–5 days: Shangrila and the Kachura lakes, a 4x4 day on the Deosai plateau, and a heritage valley such as Shigar or Khaplu. Flying saves the two-day overland drive, leaving more time on the ground.
