Neelum Valley tour — green river valley and forested slopes in Azad Kashmir

Neelum Valley Tour

Azad Kashmir's emerald river valley — Keran, Sharda, Kel and the road to Arang Kel.

Published June 18, 2026 Pakistan Travellers Team 5 min read

Neelum Valley is the most beautiful corner of Azad Kashmir — a long, lush river valley where the emerald Neelum river runs between forested slopes and terraced villages. From Keran and Sharda to Kel, Arang Kel and the high Ratti Gali Lake, it is one of Pakistan's greenest and most romantic destinations, popular for families and honeymooners alike. Our tours handle the long valley drive, hotels and the jeep and chairlift transfers.

Highlights of Neelum Valley

The valley unfolds village by village along the river: Keran and Upper Neelum with riverside views across to the Line of Control, Sharda with its ancient ruins, Kel as the gateway to Arang Kel, and the stunning high-alpine Ratti Gali Lake. Waterfalls, forests and the vivid green river make almost every stop photogenic.

How to get to Neelum Valley

Neelum is reached via Muzaffarabad — about 5–6 hours from Islamabad to Muzaffarabad, then a long, scenic valley road. Distances inside the valley are deceptive because the road is winding, so a good driver and a realistic itinerary matter. Our packages include comfortable transport throughout.

Best time to visit

Summer (May–September) is the main season — green, mild and best for the upper valley, Arang Kel and Ratti Gali Lake. Autumn brings golden colours. Winter is cold and snowy with limited upper access, though lower Neelum stays beautiful. We plan around the season and roads.

Tour packages and cost

Neelum is usually a 4–6 day tour, from lower valley (Keran, Sharda) to upper valley (Kel, Arang Kel) and optionally Ratti Gali Lake. Cost depends on how far up you go, group size and hotels. Tell us your dates and group for an all-in quote from Islamabad or Lahore.

What's included

  • Private transport with a trained mountain driver (Coaster/van for larger groups)
  • Handpicked hotels — Standard, Executive, Luxury or Premium on request
  • Daily breakfast
  • Fuel, toll taxes & driver allowance
  • Expert local guide & 24/7 on-trip support

Not included

  • Lunch & dinner
  • Personal expenses (shopping, tips, etc.)
  • Extra activities (boating, jet ski, chairlifts)
  • Travel insurance & air tickets (unless a by-air package)
BUILT AROUND YOU

Most Neelum Valley trips are fully customised

We rarely sell a fixed, off-the-shelf tour. Instead we build each itinerary around your dates, group size, pace and budget — and confirm hotels based on live availability for your travel window. Your total package cost comes down to just two choices:

1 · Your vehicle

A private 4×4 with a trained mountain driver, sized to your group. For a smooth, comfortable mountain journey we usually recommend the Toyota Prado TZ, though the full range — from sedans to Land Cruisers, Grand Cabins and Coasters — is available depending on your group size.

2 · Your hotel standard

Choose from four tiers — Standard, Executive, Luxury and Premium. Same route, elevated comfort at each step. Premium and 5★ stays such as Shangrila, Broqand other resorts deliver the best locations and views; these raise the total but are worth it for a special trip.
