Fairy Meadows Trek: A Beginner's Survival Guide

What to pack, how the jeep ride works, and why the trek is easier than it looks.
Fairy Meadows is the classic Northern Pakistan trek — a green alpine meadow at around 3,300 m staring straight at the sheer face of Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest mountain. The good news for first-timers: it is far more achievable than it looks. Here's exactly how the journey works and what to pack.
The journey: jeep + trek
From the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge, a famous (and thrilling) jeep track climbs to Tato village. From Tato it is a 2–3 hour walk uphill to the meadows — you can hire a porter for bags or a pony for the ride if you'd rather not carry weight.
How hard is the trek?
The trek is rated easy to moderate. Most reasonably fit adults and children over about eight years old manage it comfortably with breaks. The altitude is modest, but take the walk slowly and stay hydrated.
What to pack
Bring sturdy hiking shoes, warm layers (nights drop to 5–12°C even in summer), sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a small daypack. Carry a basic medical kit with pain relief and any personal medication.
Where you stay
Accommodation is in traditional wooden huts or tented camps with simple facilities and unbeatable Nanga Parbat views. With an extra day you can hike on to Beyal Camp, which sits even closer to the mountain's base.
