Fairy Meadows Trek Guide for Beginners

Fairy Meadows is the kind of place that makes you forget you were ever tired. After a four-hour drive from the Karakoram Highway, a heart-pumping jeep ride and a steady uphill trek through pine forest, you step out onto a wide alpine meadow with Nanga Parbat — the world's ninth-highest mountain — staring you directly in the face. This guide walks first-time trekkers through everything we wish someone had told us before our first trip.

Getting to Raikot Bridge

The journey starts at Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, about 80 km past Chilas. From Islamabad it's a 10–12 hour drive — most groups overnight in Chilas or Besham. From Gilgit it's only 2 hours. Raikot Bridge is the official starting point where you switch from your sedan or Hiace into a local 4x4 jeep for the next section.

The Famous Raikot to Tattu Jeep Ride

This 12 km, 60-minute ride is legendary. The track climbs 1,500m on a narrow gravel road carved into the cliffside, with sheer drops on one side and rock walls on the other. Only registered local drivers are allowed — they have a monopoly and know every inch. Jeeps seat 6 passengers and cost about PKR 14,000 round-trip per jeep in 2026. It feels terrifying for the first 10 minutes; after that you relax and enjoy the views.

The Trek from Tattu Village to Fairy Meadows

From Tattu (2,800m) you walk 5 km uphill through fragrant pine forest to Fairy Meadows (3,300m). Average time is 3 hours at a relaxed pace, 4 hours with kids or older travellers. The trail is well-marked, wide enough for two people, and follows a stream most of the way. Porters charge about PKR 2,500 per bag, and horses for non-walkers cost PKR 4,000–5,000 one-way. We strongly recommend hiring a porter so you can enjoy the walk without a heavy daypack.

Where to Stay at Fairy Meadows

Accommodation is in wooden huts (no permanent concrete buildings are allowed in the protected zone). Raikot Sarai is the most established option with cleaner huts, hot water bottles and decent food. Fairy Meadows Cottages and Nanga Parbat Resort are good mid-range alternatives. A standard wooden hut sleeps 2–4 people and costs PKR 6,000–10,000 per night with meals. Bring a sleeping bag liner — nights drop to 5°C even in July.

The Beyal Camp Side Trek

Don't skip this. A 2-hour gentle trek from Fairy Meadows takes you to Beyal Camp (3,500m) — closer to Nanga Parbat with a small reflection lake. From Beyal, fit trekkers can continue another 3–4 hours to Nanga Parbat View Point at the actual base camp glacier. Start early (6 AM) for the best views and to be back before afternoon clouds roll in.

Practical Travel Tips

• Pack light — a 30L daypack is plenty. Sturdy hiking shoes, a fleece, a windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle are essentials.
• Carry cash. There is no card payment anywhere past Raikot Bridge.
• Altitude rarely causes serious problems at 3,300m, but drink lots of water and avoid alcohol the first night.
• Book your jeep and hut at least a week in advance during July and August — the place fills up.
• Respect the conservation rules: no plastic bottles, no loud music, no off-trail walking.

Best Time to Visit Fairy Meadows

Fairy Meadows is open from late April to mid-October. June through August offers the warmest weather (15–22°C daytime), lush green meadows and wildflowers. September has the clearest mountain views and fewer crowds. April–May and October are cold, with some huts closed and trails sometimes snow-covered. The jeep track closes from November to April due to ice.

Suggested 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Drive Islamabad to Chilas (10 hours), overnight in Chilas.
Day 2: Drive Chilas to Raikot Bridge (1 hour), jeep to Tattu (1 hour), trek to Fairy Meadows (3 hours), arrive for sunset over Nanga Parbat.
Day 3: Sunrise viewing, trek to Beyal Camp and back (5 hours), descend to Raikot, return drive.
