Khunjerab Pass Tour Packages
The highest paved border crossing on earth — the Pakistan–China frontier at 4,693 m.
When is Khunjerab Pass open, and can you drive to the China border?
Khunjerab Pass sits at 4,693 m on the Pakistan–China border and is the highest paved international crossing in the world. It is normally open around May to November, snow permitting, and is reached by a paved drive from Hunza through Gojal, Sost and Khunjerab National Park. Pakistan Travellers includes it as a day trip on Hunza packages.
- Roughly 3–4 hours each way from Karimabad; the road is paved throughout.
- The border gate itself is closed to tourist crossings — you visit the marker and turn back.
- At 4,693 m expect breathlessness; do not attempt it on your first day in the mountains.
Our Khunjerab Pass tour packages take you to the roof of the Karakoram Highway — the Pakistan–China border at 4,693 m, the highest paved international crossing on earth. The drive up from Hunza through Gojal, Sost and the Khunjerab National Park is one of the great mountain journeys in the world, and it pairs naturally with Karimabad, Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones.
What a Khunjerab Pass tour covers
Khunjerab is visited as a day trip within a wider Hunza itinerary of 6 to 8 days. From a base in Karimabad or Gojal, you drive up the Karakoram Highway through Passu and Sost, into the Khunjerab National Park, and on to the border gate itself. Along the way there is a real chance of spotting Himalayan wildlife — ibex, marmots and, rarely, the elusive snow leopard.
Getting to the border and altitude
At 4,693 m Khunjerab is high enough that the thin air is noticeable, so we build the trip so you are already acclimatised in Hunza before the ascent, keep the time at the top sensible, and carry water and warm layers. The pass is only open in the warmer months; the gate area, marker stones and sweeping views make the effort worthwhile.
Best time to visit Khunjerab Pass
The pass is typically open from around April/May to late November or early December, and closed by snow in deep winter. Summer (June to September) offers the most reliable access and the greenest national park. The exact opening depends on the season's snowfall, so we always keep the plan flexible. Our best time to visit Hunza guide has more detail on timing your trip.
How much does a Khunjerab Pass tour cost?
Khunjerab is included as a day trip within a Hunza package rather than sold separately. By-road Hunza tours that add it start from around PKR 217,000 for a couple — about PKR 108,500 each — with Executive and Luxury tiers costing more. The Khunjerab National Park entry fee is a small extra we explain up front. Your final price depends on group size, season, hotel tier and the side trips you add.

Most Hunza trips are fully customised
We rarely sell a fixed, off-the-shelf tour. Instead we build each itinerary around your dates, group size, pace and budget — and confirm hotels based on live availability for your travel window. Your total package cost comes down to just two choices:
A private 4×4 with a trained mountain driver, sized to your group. For a smooth, comfortable mountain journey we usually recommend the Toyota Prado TZ, though the full range — from sedans to Land Cruisers, Grand Cabins and Coasters — is available depending on your group size.
Choose from four tiers — Standard, Executive, Luxury and Premium. Same route, elevated comfort at each step. Premium and 5★ stays such as Shangrila, Broqand other resorts deliver the best locations and views; these raise the total but are worth it for a special trip.
