Khunjerab is visited as a day trip within a wider Hunza itinerary of 6 to 8 days. From a base in Karimabad or Gojal, you drive up the Karakoram Highway through Passu and Sost, into the Khunjerab National Park, and on to the border gate itself. Along the way there is a real chance of spotting Himalayan wildlife — ibex, marmots and, rarely, the elusive snow leopard.

The pass is only open in the warmer months; the gate area, marker stones and sweeping views make the effort worthwhile.

The pass is typically open from around April/May to late November or early December, and closed by snow in deep winter. Khunjerab is included as a day trip within a Hunza package rather than sold separately.
