Quick answer

How do you reach Naltar Valley and its rainbow lakes?

Naltar Valley is reached by a rough jeep track from Gilgit, taking roughly 2–3 hours, and is known for pine forests, alpine meadows and the Naltar rainbow lakes. In winter the same slopes host Pakistan's best-known ski resort. Pakistan Travellers runs it as a day trip or overnight add-on to Hunza packages.

  • 4x4 jeep only — the track from Gilgit is not suitable for ordinary cars.
  • The rainbow lakes are best from June to September, once the snow has cleared.
  • Winter access is for the ski resort; the upper lakes are closed then.

Our Naltar Valley tour packages open up one of the most beautiful hidden corners of Gilgit Baltistan — a lush green valley of pine forests, alpine meadows and the celebrated Naltar rainbow lakes, reached by a thrilling jeep track from Gilgit. In winter the same slopes host Pakistan's best-known ski resort. Naltar pairs perfectly with Hunza for a complete Karakoram trip.

What a Naltar Valley tour covers

Naltar is usually visited as a 1 to 2 day excursion from Gilgit or as part of a wider Hunza itinerary. A typical trip drives up the jeep track from Gilgit into the pine forests of Naltar, with a jeep-and-walk excursion to the vividly coloured rainbow lakes (Naltar Lakes) higher up the valley, plus time in the meadows and forests around Naltar Bala.

The rainbow lakes and skiing

The Naltar or 'rainbow' lakes are a cluster of small alpine lakes whose waters shift between blue, green and turquoise depending on the light — a favourite of photographers. In winter, Naltar's slopes turn into Pakistan's premier ski destination, hosting national competitions, making the valley a genuinely year-round place to visit.

Best time to visit Naltar Valley

Naltar is green and beautiful from May to October, when the jeep track to the rainbow lakes is open and the meadows are in full colour — this is the best window for most travellers. For skiing, the season runs roughly December to February. The upper track can be affected by weather, so we keep the plan flexible.

How much does a Naltar Valley tour cost?

Naltar is added to a Hunza or Gilgit package rather than sold alone. The 8-day Hunza and Naltar honeymoon starts from around PKR 217,000 for a couple — about PKR 108,500 each. The local jeep hire for the rough track up to the rainbow lakes is a small extra we include or explain clearly. Final pricing depends on group size, season, hotel tier and the add-ons you choose.

BUILT AROUND YOU

Most Naltar Valley trips are fully customised

We rarely sell a fixed, off-the-shelf tour. Instead we build each itinerary around your dates, group size, pace and budget — and confirm hotels based on live availability for your travel window. Your total package cost comes down to just two choices:

1 · Your vehicle

A private 4×4 with a trained mountain driver, sized to your group. For a smooth, comfortable mountain journey we usually recommend the Toyota Prado TZ, though the full range — from sedans to Land Cruisers, Grand Cabins and Coasters — is available depending on your group size.

2 · Your hotel standard

Choose from four tiers — Standard, Executive, Luxury and Premium. Same route, elevated comfort at each step. Premium and 5★ stays such as Shangrila, Broqand other resorts deliver the best locations and views; these raise the total but are worth it for a special trip.
