Hunza was an independent princely state ruled by the Mir of Hunza for nearly 900 years until it formally merged with Pakistan in 1974. The 700-year-old Baltit Fort in Karimabad and the even older Altit Fort are living reminders of that royal past, both meticulously restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Hunzakuts speak Burushaski — a language unrelated to any other in the world — and have long been famous for their longevity, with traditional diets rich in apricots, walnuts and glacial mineral water.
