Eagle's Nest Viewpoint

What you see

The view that brings people up here is Rakaposhi, 7,788 m, rising almost straight out of the valley floor. On clear days you can pick out Diran, the Ultar peaks behind Karimabad and the sharp spires around the Hunza gorge. The valley itself is part of the view: small fields stepped into the slopes, irrigation channels and the Hunza River far below.

Because the peaks are to the south and east, the light changes fast at both ends of the day. At sunrise the first light hits the summits while the valley is still in shadow; at sunset the snow glows long after the fields go dark.

Sunrise or sunset?

Both are worth it, and which you choose usually depends on where you are staying. Sunset is easier if you are based in Karimabad: drive up in the late afternoon, watch the light go, and be back for dinner. Sunrise means an early start or a night at Duikar, but the valley is completely quiet and the air is clearest first thing.

It gets cold quickly once the sun goes, even in summer, so bring a warm layer. In spring and autumn a proper jacket is needed at dawn and dusk.

Getting there

Duikar is reached by a narrow, steep road above Altit. It is manageable for the jeeps and 4x4 vehicles used in Hunza, but not something to attempt in a low car without local knowledge. From the parking area it is a short walk up to the rocks at the top. Let us know if anyone in your group has mobility concerns and we will plan the visit around it.

Fitting it into your trip

The Eagle's Nest is the natural end to a day of Baltit and Altit forts, since all three are in the same part of central Hunza. On a longer trip it also works as a first-evening welcome to the valley. From Karimabad, Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones are the next stops north.
