However you get here, the flight or the overnight bus, we collect you and get you into the guest house before anything else. The afternoon goes to Lower and Upper Kachura, twenty minutes out of town, with Shangrila on the lower lake. Boating there is paid at the jetty and is not part of the package. Seven days means nothing about today needs hurrying.
An hour up the Shigar road, which keeps going long past the village towards the Braldu and the trailheads the K2 expeditions walk in from. We stop well short of that. The fort and the old timber mosque are the fixed points of the day. At Sarfaranga the paragliding, quad bikes and jeep safaris run in season, all paid on the spot rather than included.
The longest drive of the week at three hours east, which is why it takes a whole day rather than half of one. Past Khaplu the road carries on towards Hushe and the Masherbrum side, where the trekking parties go. For us it is the palace above the village, the mosque below it, and enough time to eat and walk before turning back.
The Corolla stays in Skardu today. Basho needs the Prado, which this package includes for this day and for Deosai, because the last stretch is a jeep track rather than a road. Two hours out the valley opens into pine forest and a cold river, which is not what the rest of Baltistan looks like at all. Subject to weather and road conditions on the day.
Up past Sadpara and onto the plateau above four thousand metres, roughly three hours to Sheosar Lake in the Prado. Through July and August the ground carries wildflowers; before that it is still under snow and shut. Brown bears live here and people do see them, usually early or late in the day, but nobody honest promises one. Subject to weather and road conditions on the day.
Nothing is booked today, which on a seven-day trip is a decision rather than a gap. Kharpocho Fort stands above the town and the walk up takes around half an hour for the view over the Indus. The Katpana cold desert is nearer than Sarfaranga. Or stay put: the bazaar is where the dried apricots, gemstones and Baltistani wool are.
Breakfast, checkout, and a drop wherever you need it — Skardu airport, or the bus stand if you are heading down by road. Flights out of here cancel on weather more often than the timetable admits, so if you are flying we wait with you until check-in is done. If you are going by road it is a long day south, and an early start helps.
