1. 1Day 1:Arrival & Kachura Lakes

   Your driver meets the Islamabad flight at Skardu airport and takes you out to the Kachura lakes the same afternoon. Lower Kachura is the one most people photograph, with the Shangrila resort on its edge; Upper Kachura, a short walk further on, is deeper, colder and usually empty. A gentle first day while you adjust to the altitude. The flight is weather dependent; timings and routing may change according to the airline.

2. 2Day 2:Shigar Valley

   Shigar is an hour from Skardu along the river. The fort dominates the village, a raja's house rebuilt stone by stone by the Aga Khan Trust and now run as a hotel, so you can walk in and see the rooms without staying there. The Amburiq Mosque nearby is small, wooden and very old. The Sarfaranga cold desert and Blind Lake fill the afternoon on the way back.

3. 3Day 3:Basho Valley Adventure

   Basho is two hours out and the last section is a jeep track, so the day runs in the 4x4 that comes with the package. What waits at the end is unexpected for Baltistan: pine forest, meadow and a cold river, green in a region that is otherwise rock and sand. There is no schedule beyond walking, sitting by the water and photographs. Subject to weather and road conditions on the day.

4. 4Day 4:Waterfalls & Skardu Sightseeing

   Two and a half hours south along the Indus into Kharmang for the Manthokha waterfall, which drops in stages and is at its loudest while the snow is still melting. Hussainabad waterfall and Chocolate Rock are stops on the same road back. That leaves the late afternoon for Skardu bazaar, which is where the dried apricots and Baltistani woollens are worth buying.

5. 5Day 5:Departure

   Breakfast and checkout, then the airport transfer. The return flight is as weather dependent as the inbound one, so keep the day after it loose if your plans allow. If it cancels we rebook you on the next departure and stay with you rather than leaving you to sort it out at the terminal; the road journey is available separately if you would rather not wait.
