The lake and the plains

Sheosar sits at about 4,250 m and is roughly 2.3 km long and 1.8 km wide. Its name is often translated as the blind lake in Shina. Around it, the plains of Deosai National Park, established in 1993, stretch in every direction at an average of over 4,100 m. In summer they are covered with wildflowers, and streams wind across them towards Bara Pani.

Deosai is best known for the Himalayan brown bear. The population has recovered from around 19 bears in 1993 to 78 counted in 2022. Sightings are never guaranteed, and bears should only ever be watched from a distance, from the vehicle.

When the road is open

The plains are under snow from about November to May. The jeep road across Deosai usually opens in summer, and the reliable window is roughly June to early September, with July and August the most dependable. The exact opening depends on snow each year, so we confirm the road before every Deosai trip.

Getting there

Deosai can be reached from Skardu or from Astore on the other side. From Skardu it is a full-day excursion by jeep or 4x4, climbing steeply out of the valley onto the plains and crossing to Sheosar near the western edge. From the Chilum side near Astore, the lake is roughly four hours by jeep. Some trips cross the whole plateau between the two, which makes Deosai part of the journey rather than a detour.

What to bring

Even in July it can be cold and windy at 4,250 m, and weather changes quickly. Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sun protection and water. There are no shops on the plains. Altitude affects some people: move slowly, drink water and tell your guide if you feel unwell. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should ask their doctor before going this high.

Early morning is often the stillest time for reflections on the lake, and clouds tend to build over the peaks as the day warms. Keep the day flexible: on Deosai, the weather decides.
