Skardu Travel Cost Guide

A comprehensive 2026 budget breakdown — flights, jeeps, hotels, food and real sample totals.

Published March 15, 2026 Updated June 14, 2026 Pakistan Travellers Editorial 8 min read

Skardu can be done on a backpacker's budget or as a proper luxury escape, and the gap between the two is enormous. The biggest variables are how you get there (the PIA flight versus the long road), where you sleep, and how many jeep excursions to places like Deosai you tack on. This guide gives you honest 2026 PKR ranges for every part of a Skardu trip, then pulls them together into sample total budgets for a solo traveller, a couple and a family of four — both budget and comfort versions.

What a Skardu Trip Really Costs

There is no single answer to what Skardu costs, because the same five days can run anywhere from PKR 60,000 to over PKR 250,000 per person. Transport is usually the largest line item, followed by accommodation and then jeep excursions. The trick to budgeting well is to decide your three big levers first — air or road, guesthouse or resort, and how many rough-track day trips you want — and let the smaller costs like food and entry fees fall into place around them.

Getting There: Air vs Road

  • By air (PIA, Islamabad ↔ Skardu): A return ticket is roughly PKR 45,000–65,000 per person; one-way around PKR 20,000–35,000. About an hour in the air, but flights are weather-dependent and can cancel, so keep a buffer.
  • By road (private car/Prado hire): A Prado from Islamabad costs roughly PKR 30,000 per day including fuel and driver. A 5-day trip therefore runs upward of PKR 150,000 for the vehicle alone — best value when split across a group.
  • By road (shared/coaster): A seat on a quality private coach is far cheaper per head, often a few thousand rupees each way, at the cost of comfort and flexibility.

Local Jeeps & Excursions

Skardu's headline sights sit at the end of rough tracks that need a 4x4, and these are hired locally and separately from your main transport. A full-day jeep to the Deosai Plains or out to Basho Valley costs roughly PKR 15,000–25,000 for the whole vehicle, which you split among your group. Shorter local runs around Skardu — to Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Shigar or the Katpana cold desert — are cheaper, often PKR 5,000–10,000 for a half day. Filling the jeep to capacity is the single easiest way to cut your per-person excursion cost.

Accommodation Tiers

  • Budget guesthouses: PKR 5,000–8,000 per night for a clean, simple room.
  • Standard 3-star hotels: PKR 10,000–18,000 per night.
  • Luxury resorts (Shangrila Resort, Serena Shigar Fort): PKR 40,000–80,000+ per night, often with breakfast and grounds included.

Food & Daily Expenses

Eating is one of the cheaper parts of a Skardu trip if you stick to local restaurants. A solid meal at a standard tourist restaurant runs roughly PKR 1,500–3,000 per person, while simple local dhabas are cheaper still. Budget around PKR 3,000–6,000 per person per day for all meals if you eat out normally; dining inside the luxury resorts costs considerably more. Bottled water, tea, snacks and the occasional treat add a little on top, so a daily incidentals allowance of PKR 1,000–2,000 is sensible.

A couple of food-specific notes for Skardu. Long jeep days to Deosai or Basho take you well beyond any restaurant, so you either carry a packed lunch from your hotel or arrange one with your driver, which adds a small cost but saves you going hungry. Apricots, cherries and mulberries in season are cheap and excellent, and local Balti dishes are worth seeking out over generic tourist menus. If you are self-catering at a guesthouse to save money, the Skardu bazaar is the place to stock up on fruit, bread and basics before heading out for the day.

Entry, Boating & Jeep Extras

Several Skardu experiences carry small standalone charges. The Deosai National Park entry fee is modest (a few hundred rupees per person for locals, more for foreign nationals). Boating on the Kachura and Shangrila lakes typically costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees depending on the boat and duration. Add fuel surcharges drivers sometimes pass on for very long jeep days, plus tips for drivers and hotel staff. None of these are large individually, but budgeting PKR 5,000–10,000 per person across a trip for these extras keeps you from being caught short.

Sample Total Budgets

These are realistic all-in ranges per trip (4–5 days) covering transport, stay, food, jeeps and extras for 2026.

  • Solo backpacker, budget, by road: PKR 60,000–90,000 — shared coach, guesthouse, local food, one shared Deosai jeep.
  • Solo, comfort, by air: PKR 130,000–180,000 — return flight, 3-star hotel, a couple of excursions.
  • Couple, budget, by road: PKR 130,000–180,000 total — shared transport, guesthouse, local food, split jeeps.
  • Couple, comfort, by air: PKR 220,000–320,000 total — two flights, 3-star or one resort night, full excursion programme.
  • Family of four, budget, by road: PKR 220,000–320,000 total — own/shared vehicle, guesthouses, local food, jeeps split four ways.
  • Family of four, comfort, by air: PKR 400,000–600,000 total — four flights, good hotels with a resort splurge, multiple jeep days.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Travel by road in a shared or filled vehicle to cut the biggest cost; reserve flying for when time is tight.
  • Book flights at least 3 weeks ahead and stay flexible on dates for the lowest fares.
  • Choose clean guesthouses over resorts for most nights, then splurge on one resort night if you want the experience.
  • Eat at local restaurants and dhabas rather than hotel dining rooms.
  • Always fill jeeps to capacity so the per-person cost of Deosai and Basho trips drops sharply.
  • Visit in the shoulder season for lower rates and thinner crowds.

Want your costs locked in with no surprises? Compare fixed-price Skardu tour packages that bundle transport, hotels, jeep excursions and breakfasts — usually better value than piecing it together yourself once you add up every line above.
