Where to Stay: Choosing Your Area

There are three broad bases. Skardu Bazaar and Satellite Town put you in the centre — close to food, drivers, fuel and the airport, and the cheapest place to find a room; the trade-off is a busy, ordinary town setting rather than scenery from your window. The Kachura area, about 30–40 minutes out, is where the famous lakeside resorts sit; you get the view and the calm but you are away from town and dependent on the hotel for meals. The heritage valleys — Shigar (under an hour) and Khaplu (around 2.5 hours from Skardu) — are a different trip altogether, best for travellers who want history and quiet and are willing to make them a destination rather than a day trip. Luxury & Heritage Stays

At the top end, Skardu's standouts are as much about setting and history as service. Expect roughly PKR 30,000–80,000+ per night in season.

• Shangrila Resort (Lower Kachura Lake): the region's best-known resort, set around the heart-shaped Lower Kachura (Shangrila) Lake. Lovely grounds and cottages; the catch is that it is out of town and books out far ahead in summer.
• Serena Shigar Fort (Shigar): a restored centuries-old fort run as a heritage hotel. Atmospheric and quiet, with a strong sense of place; rooms are limited and it sits about an hour from Skardu.
• Serena Khaplu Palace (Khaplu): another beautifully restored heritage palace, roughly 2.5 hours from Skardu. Worth it as its own overnight, not as a base for Skardu day trips.

Upper Mid-Range Hotels

Between the heritage properties and the basic guesthouses sits a growing band of comfortable, modern hotels in and around Skardu town. Standard 3-star hotels in Skardu generally run PKR 10,000–20,000 a night and are perfectly comfortable for most trips. Below that, family-run guesthouses around Skardu Bazaar and Satellite Town go for about PKR 4,000–9,000. They will not have lake views or polished service, but the better ones offer clean beds, hot water, home-cooked food and genuinely warm hosts. What to Expect on Price by Season

Skardu is highly seasonal and prices move with it. July and August are peak — the lakes and high valleys are open, demand is at its highest, and rates can run well above the ranges quoted here, with the best rooms gone early. Eid holidays spike just as hard. May, June, September and early October are the value windows: pleasant weather, fewer crowds and softer prices. In the deep off-season many hotels close or run skeleton service. As a rule, the closer you stay to July–August and Eid, the more you pay and the earlier you must commit.

Power, Wifi & Practical Realities

Manage your expectations on infrastructure. Load-shedding is a fact of life, so most reputable hotels run generators — you will notice brief outages rather than long blackouts, but a power bank is still worth carrying. Wifi exists in town and at the resorts, yet it is frequently slow and unreliable; treat it as good enough for messaging and not for uploading photos or working online. Heating matters outside midsummer, since nights are cold even in spring and autumn — check that your room has a working heater or extra bedding. Hot water can be limited to certain hours at budget properties.
