Hunza Tour From Lahore

From Lahore, a Hunza trip starts with one extra step that travellers from Islamabad do not have: you first have to cover the plains. The good news is that this first leg, Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2 motorway, is the easiest and fastest part of the whole journey. The mountains only begin once you are north of the capital. This page is honest about that two-stage shape — the quick motorway run, then the long, slow, spectacular drive up the Karakoram Highway — plus the fly options, 2026 costs and the itinerary we run.

Starting from Lahore: the extra leg

Hunza is about 1,000 km from Lahore, and there is no way around the fact that the journey breaks naturally into two halves. The first half — Lahore to Islamabad — is motorway driving on the plains and barely feels like part of a mountain trip. The second half, Islamabad onward, is where the real Karakoram driving begins. Because of this, every Lahore-to-Hunza plan is really an Islamabad-to-Hunza plan with a motorway leg bolted on the front and back. Budget your days accordingly and you will avoid the most common mistake, which is under-allowing time.

Leg 1: Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2

The M-2 motorway between Lahore and Islamabad is one of the best roads in the country — a 375 km dual carriageway that takes roughly 4–5 hours at a steady pace, with proper service areas for fuel and food. Many of our Lahore clients leave the city in the afternoon, overnight in or near Islamabad, and start the mountain section fresh the next morning. That single early start matters: the first mountain day is long, and you do not want to begin it already tired from the motorway.

Leg 2: up the Karakoram Highway

North of Islamabad the road changes character completely. The Karakoram Highway runs about 600 km through Besham, Chilas and Gilgit, following the Indus River through deep gorges before the Karakoram opens up. In summer there is the alternative of crossing the Babusar Pass (4,173 m) via the Naran Kaghan valley, which is more scenic but only open roughly late June to September. Either way this is the slow half — 14 to 18 hours of moving time — and the half people remember, with Rakaposhi rising head-on as you near Hunza Valley.

The fly-from-Lahore option

If two days of road each way is too much, you can shorten the trip from the Lahore end. The simplest version is to fly Lahore to Islamabad — about an hour — and then either drive the Karakoram Highway or take the onward PIA flight to Gilgit, followed by a 2.5–3 hour drive into Karimabad. Gilgit flights are limited and cancel often in bad weather, so we always hold a road fallback. A popular hybrid for Lahore travellers is to fly up and drive back, so you save time arriving but still experience the full KKH on the return.

How long it takes & where to stop

Counting the motorway leg, a Lahore road trip to Hunza is genuinely a multi-day journey in each direction, which is why we recommend more time than an Islamabad start. Nobody should attempt it as a straight drive.

• Leg 1: Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2, about 4–5 hours.
• Overnight option: rest in or near Islamabad before the mountain start.
• Leg 2 stop: Chilas on the KKH, or Naran if crossing Babusar in summer.
• Arrival: Karimabad by the afternoon of the second mountain day.

Realistic 2026 ranges for a trip starting in Lahore. The extra distance versus an Islamabad start mainly shows up in fuel and one or two more nights on the road.
