Naran Kaghan Valley — 5 Day Itinerary

Naran and the wider Kaghan Valley remain Pakistan's most accessible mountain escape — close enough to Islamabad for a long weekend, but high enough to feel like a different world. This 5-day itinerary is the one we use for first-time visitors who want lakes, mountains, a taste of Babusar Top and time to actually relax instead of rushing.

Day 1 — Islamabad to Naran

Depart Islamabad around 7 AM. The drive takes you through Hassan Abdal, Abbottabad, Mansehra and the Kaghan Valley entrance at Balakot. Stop for breakfast at Mansehra and lunch by the Kunhar River around Balakot. You arrive in Naran (2,400m) by late afternoon. Check into your hotel and walk through the Naran bazaar in the evening — try fresh trout for dinner at one of the riverside restaurants.

Day 2 — Saif-ul-Malook Lake

After breakfast, take a local jeep to Saif-ul-Malook Lake (3,200m, 9 km from Naran, 45 minutes). This legendary alpine lake sits at the foot of Malika Parbat, Pakistan's highest peak in the Kaghan Valley. The water shifts from emerald green to turquoise depending on the light. Spend 3–4 hours: walk around a section of the shore, take a wooden boat ride, sip kahwa at the lakeside cafes. Return to Naran by afternoon. Evening free for shopping local shawls, dry fruit and walnuts.

Day 3 — Lulusar Lake and Babusar Top

Big day — start by 7 AM. Drive 50 km up the valley to Lulusar Lake (3,400m), source of the Kunhar River and one of Pakistan's most photogenic high-altitude lakes. Continue to Babusar Top (4,170m), the highest point on the Naran–Chilas route. The panorama from the top is breathtaking — Nanga Parbat is visible on clear days. Return to Naran by evening. (If you want a longer trip, you can continue from Babusar into Hunza and Skardu — many of our tours do this.)

Day 4 — Kaghan, Shogran and Siri Paye

Backtrack down the valley to Shogran (2,400m), a meadow town accessible by sedan. From Shogran, take a 4x4 jeep up to Siri Paye Meadows (3,000m) — one of the most beautiful alpine pastures in Pakistan, with grazing horses, herd camps and clear views of Makra and Musa Ka Musalla peaks. Lunch at the meadow, descend by 4 PM and overnight in Shogran or push back to Balakot for a shorter Day 5 drive.

Day 5 — Return to Islamabad

Easy drive back via Mansehra and the Hazara Motorway. Optional stop at Patriata or Murree if you have time. Arrive Islamabad by late afternoon.

Where to Stay in Naran

Luxury: PC Hotel Naran — international standards, heated rooms, riverside views.
Premium: Pine Park, One Hotel Naran — clean, reliable, good restaurants.
Mid-range: Lalazar Hotel, Cabana — basic but comfortable, central bazaar location.

Estimated Costs (2026)

Per person on twin-sharing, mid-range hotels: PKR 45,000–60,000 including transport from Islamabad, accommodation, breakfast, jeep day for Saif-ul-Malook and Babusar, and on-trip support. Luxury upgrade adds PKR 25,000–40,000 per person.

Practical Travel Tips

• Carry warm layers — even July nights at Naran drop to 8°C.
• Babusar Top altitude (4,170m) can cause mild headaches. Drink water, walk slowly.
• Cash is essential. Only one ATM in Naran and it is often offline.
• Buy local: shawls, walnuts, honey and dried apricots are noticeably cheaper than Islamabad.
• Avoid weekends in July if possible — Naran bazaar can be very crowded.

Best Time to Visit

Mid-May to mid-October. June–August has the best weather and full Babusar access. September gives clearer skies and fewer crowds. October has golden poplars but Babusar starts closing. Outside this window Naran becomes a snowy ghost town with most hotels closed.
