In winter the Katpana cold desert and the valleys turn white, parts of the lakes freeze, and the skies are often crystal clear. With very few tourists around, it feels remote and pristine — a completely different experience from the green summer.
Getting there in winter
Flights from Islamabad still operate when the weather allows and are the safest way in. The road via Chilas can face snow and occasional closures in winter, so flying — with a buffer day for weather — is strongly recommended.
How to pack for the cold
Temperatures can drop well below freezing. Bring a heavy down jacket, thermals, insulated waterproof boots, gloves and a warm hat. Layering is key, as daytime sun can feel mild before the cold returns at dusk.
