How to Plan a Budget Trip to Hunza

Tips on affordable transport, cheap stays, and eating local food in Karimabad.
Hunza can be a luxury escape or a famously affordable adventure. With a little planning, a budget trip to Hunza is very doable. Here's how to keep costs down on transport, stays and food without missing the highlights.
Getting there cheaply
The cheapest way to reach Hunza is a shared Hiace or coaster from Islamabad or Rawalpindi along the Karakoram Highway. Travelling overnight saves you a night's hotel cost, and booking a seat rather than a private vehicle dramatically cuts the transport bill.
Affordable stays in Karimabad & Aliabad
Karimabad and Aliabad have plenty of clean guesthouses and budget hotels with valley views. Rates drop noticeably outside the July–August peak, so spring and autumn are kinder on the wallet as well as more scenic.
Eating local
Local dhabas and small restaurants serve filling, inexpensive meals — try chapshuro, daal-chawal and fresh local bread. Bazaar snacks, dried apricots and walnuts make cheap, tasty trail food.
More ways to save
Travel in the shoulder seasons, group up to split a vehicle for day trips, and carry a refillable water bottle. A little flexibility on dates and hotels can cut a Hunza trip's cost substantially.
