How to reach Khunjerab Pass
Khunjerab is reached as a day trip up the Karakoram Highway from Hunza, usually via Sost, the last major town before the pass. The road runs through Khunjerab National Park, which charges an entry fee, and the final stretch climbs steadily to the border marker.
Altitude & how to prepare
At nearly 4,700 m, the air is thin and mild altitude symptoms — breathlessness, headache — are common. Acclimatise for a day or two in Hunza first, ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy exertion at the top. Anyone with heart or respiratory conditions should take particular care.
Weather & best time to go
The pass is generally open from around May to November and closed by snow in winter. Even in summer it is cold and windy at the top, so carry warm layers, sunglasses and sunscreen regardless of the temperature down in the valley.
What to expect at the border
At the summit you'll find the Pakistan–China border gate and marker, snow on the surrounding slopes for much of the year, and a good chance of spotting ibex, marmots or even yaks. It is a remarkable, wind-swept place — bring time for photos.
